Gabrielle Civil is a black woman poet, conceptual and performance artist, originally from Detroit, MI. Over the last fifteen years, her solo and collaborative work has premiered in the US and around the world. She is currently circulating Swallow the Fish, her critical/creative text on black feminist performance art practice, and finalizing In & Out of Place: Making Black Feminist Performance Art in Mexico, documentation of her 2008-2009 Fulbright-García Robles Fellowship project. She received a Ph.D. in comparative literature from New York University and is currently associate professor of performance at Antioch College in Yellow Springs, OH.
