Gianna Commito (b. 1976, Sea Level, NC) earned a BFA from The New York State College of Ceramics at Alfred University, Alfred, NY and an MFA from the University of Iowa, Iowa City, IA. She paints with casein on marble dust or clay ground to reflect her interest in architecture, building materials, and by extension a continuing exploration of public versus private space and the development and collapse of the built environment. Commito is represented by Uffner & Liu Gallery in New York, NY, Abattoir Gallery in Cleveland, OH, and Marrow in San Francisco, CA. She has been included in exhibitions at Fleisher/Ollman Gallery, Philadelphia, PA; The Akron Art Museum, Akron, OH; Lehman College Art Department, New York, NY; Webster State University, Ogden, UT; MOCA Cleveland, Cleveland, OH; National Academy, New York, NY; and the Drawing Center, New York, NY; among others. Commito is the recipient of numerous awards and fellowships, including the Columbus Museum of Art Wayne P. Lawson Award; the Cleveland Art Prize; Artist in Residence at Yaddo, Saratoga Springs, NY; the Pollock-Krasner Foundation Grant; and Artist in Residence at nido, Monte Castello di Vibio, Italy. In 2018, her work was featured in the inaugural edition of the FRONT International: Cleveland Triennial for Contemporary Art in Cleveland, OH. Her work is also placed in prominent collections such as the Akron Art Museum, Columbus Art Museum, and the Progressive Art Collection. Commito lives and works in Kent, OH.
