Jake Beckman creates installations, both small and large scale, that are informed by anatomy, paleontology, and industrial engineering. Beckmans installations are inspired by a fascination with the connections between the man-made and the natural physical world.
Born in Cleveland Heights, OH, Beckman graduated with a BA from Swarthmore College in Swarthmore, PA. and a MFA in Sculpture from the Rhode Island School of Design in Providence, RI. His work is included in the collections of The Progressive Corporation, Mayfield, OH and Swathmore College, Swathmore, PA. Beckman has showed solo exhibitions at the Green Mountain College's Feick Arts Center in Poultney, VT, Black Sheep Project Space in Providence, RI, and The Sculpture Center in Cleveland, OH.
He also exhibited his work during Street Repairs and as a SPACELab artist in 2006 at SPACES and returned in 2014 as SWAP resident. He has been shown in group exhibitions throughout Ohio, New York, Rhode Island, Massachusetts, Connecticut, Pennsylvania and Florence, Italy. Beckman was an instructor at Rhode Island School of Design, RI, in 2011, a visiting assistant professor at Swarthmore College, PA, from 2012-2013, and an adjunct instructor at Community College of Philadelpha, PA, from 2012-2013.
