Jan Liesegang

January Liesegang, born in Cologne in 1968, is an architect and co-founder of Raumlabor, a collective of eight experimental architects in Berlin at the intersection of architecture, urban planning, art and intervention. Raumlaborberlin was founded in 1999 as an interest group of several artists and architects who work in each project-oriented and interdisciplinary common goals in the architecture, the urban development, performance art, landscape architecture, design of public space and to pursue with artistic installations. Raumlabor seeks to address issues of urban renewal through research-based design at a grassroots level, initiating processes that give actors the opportunity to know, understand and use the city and its dynamics, as well as its possibilities. Recent projects include Officina Rome, a villa constructed entirely out of recycled materials; Soft Solution, an indoor/outdoor installation for the 4th European Month of Photography Festival in Berlin; and Vortex, an installation at the Todays Art Festival in the Hague constructed from shipping pallets.

Liesegang studied architecture Technische Universitat Berlin, the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, and Cooper Union School of Architecture. Additionally, Liesegang worked three years for Sauerbruch Hutton Architects, was assistant of Professor Matthias Sauerbruch, held a guest professorship the Art Academy Stuttgart and held a residency at Villa Massimo, Rome in 2010.
