Joey Strunk was born and raised in the westside suburbs of Cleveland, OH, where he resides to this day. As a skateboarder from the age of 11, Joey was exposed to the nuance of space and quickly became involved in public works projects and advocacy for public spaces. Skateboarding has lead Joey’s perception of movement through and understanding of the possession of public spaces, which has heavily influenced his artistic practice. Joey received his BFA in Sculpture + Expanded Media from the Cleveland Institute of Art (CIA) in 2018. During his time at CIA, he received funding from the Fenn Educational Fund of the Cleveland Foundation, as part of CIA’s Creativity Works program. This program lead to opportunities such as Lakewood Summer Meltdown, which in turn allowed for Joey’s work to become part of The Skate Kitchen. After graduating, he received funding from Hingetown Culture Works and SPACES to produce a skate-able sculpture for the Open Streets Cleveland event, where he created Open Book and hosted a session for the local skateboarding community. Open Book was shown and performed at the Cleveland Public Library’s 150th Anniversary Festival in the summer of 2019. Most recently, Strunk was an invited artist for SPACES End of Days immersive experience and post-apocalyptic benefit party.
