Jonathan Field was born and educated in East Yorkshire. He studied at Manchester Art College where he received a BA with first degree honors in illustration. After college Field worked as an artist/illustrator for fifteen years. During that time he was a freelance illustrator in advertising, publishing and design. Some of his clients include Penguin Books, Mitchell Beazley, IBM, Esso, Pentagram Design, The Listener, Radio times, and Cosmopolitan Magazine. He has had his illustrations exhibited at Escargot Restaurant, London, and 4 Dials Gallery, London. Field has been a four time recipient of The Association of Illustrators Best of the Year Book, as well as the W.H. Smith book award from the Victoria & Albert Museum.
