Mark Schatz was born in Denver, Colorado but grew up in Michigan. He studied art at the University of Michigan, receiving a BFA from the School of Art and Architecture with a concentration in sculpture in 1998. After a few years of working in commercial art studios, he returned to school, earning an MFA in Sculpture from the University of Texas in Austin.

Mark Schatz work can be found in the permanent collection of Texas State University in San Marcos and he has exhibited at the University of Illinois at Chicago and the University of Texas at Austin, and has had solo exhibitions at the Galveston Arts Center, Lawndale Art Center, and Texas State University in San Marcos. In 2008 he received an Established Artist Fellowship from the Houston Arts Alliance. In 2011 Mark Schatz was included in the award winning exhibition, New Image Sculpture, at the McNay Museum of Art in San Antonio. Currently he is working toward a 2013 exhibition at the Cleveland Sculpture Center and he is working to complete a public art commission from the City of Austin.

In 2010 Mark Schatz joined the faculty of the School of Art at Kent State University where he now works as Assistant Professor and Coordinator for the Foundations Program.
