At the time of his death, DeVriese was the dean of the College of Fine Arts and Humanities at St. Cloud State University, located in St. Cloud, MN. He received a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Printmaking and Painting (1985) and Masters of Science degree (1988) from Illinois State University, Normal, IL. He earned a Master of Fine Arts degree from The Ohio State University in 1992. DeVriese showed in 25 international solo exhibitions, as well as in over 100 invitational exhibitions ranging from two-person shows to group exhibitions. He was also commissioned to create work for the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago and the School Employees Retirement System of Ohio in Columbus. DeVriese received mant grants and fellowships, including a residency at Anchor Graphics in Chicago, IL, and participated in the Ohio Arts Council International Program, traveling to Germany to work in the Dresden Graphic Workshop. He was an active member of CAA, the National Council of Art Administrators, the International Council of Fine Arts Deans, the National Association of Schools of Art and Design, and EDUCAUSE. Along with Living in Your Imagination, Devriese was exhibited in Connections: Ohio Artists Abroad at SPACES in 2002.
