My name is Jack Reese, I'm an intern at Spaces and an illustration student at the School of Visual Arts in New York City. For the past few months I've been working on a project called MAN-BITS, which is something in between a brand name and an artistic concept. Fueled partly by satirical critique of excessive masculinity and partly by a love for seductive packaging and flashy things, the project's aesthetic combines muscly action figures, candy wrappers, and 99 cent store packaging. MAN-BITS has taken the form of brightly colored wax limbs cast from broken action figure parts, mini comics, posters, and, most recently, a pinewood car for Spaces' Artwood Derby. MAN-BITS has been a great way for me to produce objects that mirror consumer items that I find really attractive, poke fun at people that could beat me up, and make tongue-in-cheek penis jokes.
