Open Call, Local Projects

Visual artists, architects, urban planners, and other kinds of cultural producers are invited to submit proposals for interventions, installations, and artworks that explore how arts and culture can support transportation alternatives. The proposals will be considered for display in the Hingetown area of Ohio City during the May 6, 2018 Open Streets Cleveland event (formerly ciCLEvia).

Open Streets Cleveland temporarily closes segments of Cleveland streets to cars and opens them for people, highlighting biking, walking, and dancing. Now in its third year, the Open Streets movement in Cleveland opens up approximately one mile of city streets once a month in the spring/summer. It is based on the ciclovias of Latin American cities, such as Bogota, Columbia, where over 70 miles of streets are open to people every Sunday and holiday.

SELECTION PROCESS
Hingetown Culture Works (HCW) is a platform for the co-creation, coordination, and implementation of cultural activities that serve the diverse populations living in and visiting this area of Ohio City. HCW aims to strengthen community ties, creatively address local issues, and instill a sense of collective ownership in the neighborhood among representatives from multiple sectors: businesses, residents, developers, city government, and nonprofit organizations. Member businesses and organizations include: The Music Settlement, Cleveland Museum of Art, Transformer Station, Hingetown LLC, SPACES, LAND studio, Ohio City Inc., ICA - Art Conservation, Cleveland Tea Revival, and Cuyahoga Metropolitan Housing Authority.

The HCW Review Panel, comprised of HCW members, will select proposals based on the strength of the concept, its connection to supporting people-powered movement, and the artist's demonstrated ability to see the project through. Submissions that respond to existing infrastructure, speculate on the future of transportation alternatives, and promote decreased automobile dependency are especially encouraged.

Please send a prose-form description of your idea that includes the site for your intervention (250 words max), a supporting sketch, up to 5 images of previous relevant work, and budget in a single pdf to: cvassallo@SPACESgallery.org

TIMELINE
Applications are due by 5 pm EST on April 8, 2018. The HCW Review Panel will notify applicants of its decision on April 13, 2018.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
Selected artists will receive a fee for production costs and honoraria, ranging between $250 - $1,000. Artists will also receive staff support, access to the SPACES workshops and tools, documentation, and cross-promotion through the members of Hingetown Culture Works and Open Streets.
