An Evening Exploring the Legacy of the Linares Family and the Evolution of Cartonería.
SHED Projects, in collaboration with SPACES, is excited to present a special film screening and discussion on April 12, 2025, at 6 PM as part of the Semana Santa cultural celebration. This event will highlight the internationally acclaimed Familia Linares, renowned folk artists from Mexico City, and their rich artistic tradition of Cartonería, the intricate craft of Mexican paper sculpture.
The evening will feature a screening of the 1975 documentary Pedro Linares Artesano Cartonero, directed by Judith Bronowski. This film chronicles the Linares family's legacy in Cartonería and their central role in the Quema de Judas tradition, an iconic Semana Santa ritual in Mexico.
Following the screening, SHED Projects co-founders Gabrielle Banzhaf and Jon Gott will be joined by special guests to discuss the evolution of this collaboration, tracing its origins from SHED’s 2019 Alebrije program at the Sandusky Cultural Center to the Semana Santa program today. The conversation will explore the artistic, historical, and cultural significance of Cartonería, as well as the importance of fostering international artistic exchange and community-driven storytelling.
