Imani Roach (Philadelphia , PA)
Residency: January 27 - March 25, 2017
Part of R&D
Havens responds to the 2017 R&D theme of migration and is comprised of drawings and installations based on Cleveland locations listed in the Jim Crow-era travel guides known as the "Green book." Published from the 1930s until the passage of civil rights legislation in the 1960s made it obsolete, the Green Book was an ever-evolving index of boarding houses, services stations, restaurants, beauty parlors, and everything in between that black motorists could safely patronize during their travels. Havens will explore the sites of Cleveland's own forgotten safe havens, and what they mean today.
Sponsored by City of Cleveland's Cable Television Minority Arts and Education Fund of the Cleveland Foundation.
