Sarah Rose Sharp is a writer, activist, photographer and multimedia artist. She writes about art and culture for Art in America, Hyperallergic, Flash Art, Sculpture Magazine, ArtSlant, Wallpaper, and others.
As SPACES' fifth Art Writer-in-Residence, Sharp will use her time to research a new interdisciplinary work, Tree of Knowledge. Her project considers academic practice within the humanities through the investigation of different topics that grow rhyzomatically, as branches.
In response to recent legislation around abortion access in Ohio, Georgia, and Alabama, Sharp will dedicate her residency to one branch, titled "Abortion." Her research will include how artists in Ohio are navigating issues related to abortion, both creative and pro-creative; mistakes and consequences; autonomy and commitment; and ways in which reproductive freedom — or lack thereof —has affected artistic freedom and process.
ABOUT THE ART WRITER PROGRAM
SPACES supports international, U.S. and local cultural producers in the development of new ideas, while facilitating opportunities to collaborate with audiences in Northeast Ohio through various artist in residence initiatives. Since 2002, SPACES has hosted 71 artists from around the world. In 2015, SPACES expanded to include a dedicated residency for art writers, to increase critical dialogue focused on Cleveland's vibrant art scene. This opportunity is supported by the National Endowment for the Arts.
