Flags are meant to fly, to signal, to announce, to be legible. The two flags at the center of this show deny their nature and rest comfortably, wrapped in themselves.
While Holding Ground is projected into the space (paired with live wind conditions), it may also be viewed installed on top of the Striebinger building across the street from SPACES. That building was the former home of a gay bar complex and other gay gathering venues. It provides the site where Holding Ground now stands unchanged despite changing local conditions.
The other pieces displayed are gestural works meant to punctuate the statements of the two flags. These draw attention to the bodies, hospitality, mischief, and intimacy of our lost space while considering our present circumstances.
Kat Burdine
Kat Burdine was born in St.Paul, Minnesota in the Mid-80’s. As an artist, she sabotages modes of making to produce failed prints, and objects -- investigating the consequences of socially assigned narratives and the ways we carry them. Visiting SPACES
Galleries are open from 12P- 5P, Wednesday-Saturday.
All visitors are required to wear masks and social distance from staff and other guests. SPACES is located close to the 26, 76, and 81 bus stops, as well as the Red Line Rapid station. Street parking is available throughout Hingetown, as are bike racks. We are wheelchair accessible throughout the galleries.
