Expected to Dance

Kat Burdine (b. 1986/05/19) sabotages modes of making to produce failed prints, and objects -- investigating the consequences of socially assigned narratives and the ways we carry them.

Suspicious of phrases like “Every bar is a gay bar,” SPACES resident Kat Burdine created new work to reflect on the complexities and contradictions of the shifting spaces queer bodies inhabit. Framed within the emblematic context of Hingetown, “Expected to Dance” uses communally-defined signifiers to present print, sculpture and haptic strategies that wrestle with the confinement of queer narrative in an era of inclusion and visibility.
