This work has grown out of conversations with Gardner's mother, about the place that she and Gardner grew up in, Fairfield, Alabama, a model city for U.S. Steel Corporation. Fairfield, a city that lives at the Western border of Birmingham, Alabama, is and was an experiment, in spatial-racial-class separation and segregation. These divides were not obvious. The planners used nature -- soil, earthen berm's, treelines, and dead-end streets to scar the landscape. She says "We lived inside the edges".

Tia-Simone Gardner is an interdisciplinary artist, educator, and Black feminist scholar. Working primarily with drawing, images, archives, and spaces, Gardner has made a practice of tracing Blackness in landscapes, above and below the grounds surface.
