Crystalscape: An Archive of Relation

An installation formed in partnership between artist Julie Tolentino, SPACES, and the LGBT Community Center of Greater Cleveland, Crystalscape: An Archive of Relation serves as a living archive of intergenerational queer life in Cleveland.

Crystalscape: An Archive of Relation includes a “NIGHT LAB” to illuminate the participants’ activities as they build towards the final installation. The “NIGHT LAB” illuminates the stages of collaboration between the artist and community members: the creation of crystal structures built from minerals, salts, and hair collected by participant’s communities.

Hair in this project offers a tangible foundation for crystallization and the contemplation of change - including that which is both lost and found in our thriving over the passage of time. The Lab offers traces of not only the sculptural process/progress, but a durational imprint of group breathwork, dialogue, and movement experimentation across generations, spaces, backgrounds, and futures. As the crystals grow, both individually and together, they illuminate unfurling relationships before, during, and after this exhibition.

Crystalscape: An Archive of Relation is supported by the Joyce Foundation through the 2023 Joyce Awards.
