Rainbow Lightning Mines Memories in a Cave Installation

Cleveland, OH, April 22, 2011-Rainbow Lightning, a collaborative duo of artists from Akron, are creating a cavescape inside SPACES-recycling objects, clothing, and fabrics to resemble a natural subterranean environment. Entitled "Pink Milk Mild," this installation features personal stories collected over the past year, embroidered on the walls of the cave, like graffiti in a teenager's hideout. The childlike wonder of a plush cave evokes memories that are reflected in the memories delicately sewn to the walls.

Rainbow Lightning is Chelsea Blackerby and Erica Hoosic. The two artists first met in 2008 and have been working and playing ever since. Their collective backgrounds include textiles, metals, ceramics, furniture making, upholstery, installation, painting, drawing performance and video. Rainbow Lightning takes clues from the social constructs of public space and its effect on people to demonstrate the endless permutations and combinations of material, environment, memory and meaning.

The objective goal of their work is to arouse questions of personal identity through the summoning of nostalgia. Their installations become sweeping sermons to memory and loss.
