No Exit new music ensemble will be performing a program of works inspired by the music of Eric Dolphy with concerts at Cleveland State University, SPACES, Heights Arts and The Green Mill Jazz Club. An evening of new music to be presented on March 23, 24, 30 and April 1.
Cleveland, Ohio—No Exit's upcoming series of concerts celebrate the legacy and ongoing influence of Jazz great Eric Dolphy. The ensemble's artistic director Timothy Beyer says that, "While Eric Dolphy is largely known for his contributions in the jazz world, I've always thought that so much of his music transcends the jazz idiom. I think of a lot of his work as just being avant-garde for lack of a better term. He really was an amazing and unique voice in American music. Dolphy is one of these people who defies categorization. He's just sort of 'beyond'."
No Exit will be joined by saxophonist Bobby Selvaggio, trumpeter Scott McKee and drummer Chris Baker. Beyer remarks, " We've [No Exit] wanted to do a program that brought in musicians outside of the core group and this seemed like a perfect vehicle for that. These concerts serve just not as a tribute to Eric Dolphy, but as an impetus for the creation of new works inspired by his music."
No Exit continues it's commitment to the creation of new works, particularly those by artists with a connection to North East Ohio. Among the pieces that will see their world premiere on this program are compositions by Greg D'Alessio, Ty Emerson, Jenna Lyle and two new arrangements of Eric Dolphy songs by Bobby Selvaggio and Andrew Rindfleisch. Also featured on the program is music by Garrett Byrnes and Kaija Saariaho. All performances are free and open to the public (see times and dates below).
