Cleveland, OH, October 24, 2012- Croatian multimedia artist Davor Sanvincenti goes out of his way to take notice of a new day's beginning. This fall, with support from CEC ArtsLink and the Ohio Arts Council, SPACES hosts Sanvincenti as a SPACES World Artist Program (SWAP) artist-in-residence. During his time in Cleveland, Sanvincenti will extend his ongoing series, Before the first Light, to include the natural landscapes surrounding Cleveland.
Using Polaroid photography and 16mm film, Sanvincenti records the moment just before dawn, when light first falls on the landscape, taking a single shot or reel of film per day of shooting. Though the analog equipment Sanvincenti uses is viewed by many as outmoded, he chooses it because it better relates to the experience of the dawn, a time he uses to contemplate, in French poet Mallarme's words the "virgin, vivid and beautiful today." Every stage in composing shots with this equipment immerses Sanvincenti as a collaborator with an ephemeral moment, celebrating its vitality.
Real-time 16mm film of a sunrise may surprise a viewer in how little is perceived of the transition, until light has fallen fully on the scene and transformed it. He says, "[It looks like] nothing is happening, but the day is rising." The moment cannot be reproduced, and the record of it becomes an orchestrated set of perceptions.
Sanvincenti's films, photographic works, light and sound installations and live media performances explore how our human sensory perceptions construct our experience.
On Friday, November 16, Sanvincenti's Before the first Light will open at SPACES, simultaneous with an opening of separate work in the series at the FRAC Pays de la Loire in Nantes, France.
