11 Northeast Ohio institutions receive NEA funding

Twenty-three Ohio institutions this week received a total of $517,000 in grants from the National Endowment for the Arts as part of the organization's fiscal 2016 funding awards.

There are 11 institutions in Akron and Cleveland receiving NEA money: the Akron Art Museum, Art House Inc., the Cleveland International Film Festival, the Cleveland Play House, Cleveland Public Theatre, Cuyahoga Community College Foundation, DANCECleveland, the Musical Arts Association, the Sculpture Center, SPACES and Zygote Press Inc.

Here is a brief description of each Northeast Ohio recipient:

? Akron Art Museum, $20,000 to support the exhibition "Intersections: Artists Master Line and Space," taking place in fall 2016;

? Art House, $10,000 to support a series of thematic workshops and the creation of art works as part of the Day of the Dead celebration;

? Cleveland International Film Festival, $20,000 to support the 40th annual festival, taking place in the spring;

? Cleveland Modern Dance Association (DANCECleveland), $30,000 to support its 60th anniversary with presentations of contemporary dance companies along with accompanying residency, educational and outreach activities;

? Cleveland Play House, $20,000 to support the development and premiere of a work by Quiara Alegria Hudes;

? Cleveland Public Theatre, $30,000 to support the development and production of a new work;

? Cuyahoga Community College Foundation, $25,000 to support the Tri-C JazzFest;

? Musical Arts Association (Cleveland Orchestra), $40,000 to support the orchestra's performances of Bela Bartok's opera "Bluebeard's Castle," reimagined as an opera/ballet in collaboration with the Joffrey Ballet;

? The Sculpture Center, $15,000 to support commissioning and exhibition opportunities for the Window to Sculpture emerging artists series;

? SPACES, $20,000 to support the "World Artists Program," a residency opportunity for national and international artists to create new work; and

? Zygote Press, $20,000 to support "Zygote 20: Print Marathon," celebrating the organization's 20th anniversary. Marking the occasion will be the production of new work by resident artists through exhibitions, as well as the 20th Anniversary Archive Show, public programs, a catalogue, and the creation of printed editions.

Nationwide, the NEA said it awarded $27.7 million to support 1,126 projects in 49 states plus American Samoa, the District of Columbia and Guam.
