Janus Small

My embroidery work is an outgrowth of my formal art training in drawing, painting, and printmaking. I am a self-taught embroiderer. The COVID pandemic and the resulting isolation motivated me to reflect on my life, family and surroundings. What I discovered is that I figuratively live within a work of art – that counter in the kitchen is a still-life, my chicken soup recipe ingredients create a composition, and our canines and people in our home become portraits reflecting personalities, and daily experiences that make my home and life beautiful, exciting and energizing. My work speaks on many levels – composition, color, texture, and personal feelings and emotions. I am documenting events, places, and moments dear to me and my family with my drawings, cotton fabric and embroidery floss. I hold a B.F.A in printmaking and painting from the Cleveland Institute of Art and a M.A. in Non-Profit/Arts Administration from the College Conservatory of Music at the University of Cincinnati.
