Join us at SPACES for a shared opening reception celebrating two new exhibitions meditations on be(IN) thr(u) & Patterned on Friday, May 15, 2026 from 6:00–9:00 PM, with a special performance by ọmọlolú Refilwe Bàbátúndé at 7:00 PM.

Spend the evening moving between distinct yet resonant explorations of sound, memory, and visual language.

In meditations on be(IN) thr(u), Brooklyn-based artist ọmọlolú Refilwe Bàbátúndé (shx/they) transforms the Oracle Gallery into an immersive constellation of sonic and visual work, drawing from familial archives, Black sound traditions, and practices of healing and self-emancipation. Through layered audio, video, printed matter, and a monument to Zora Neale Hurston, the exhibition invites deep reflection, attunement, and care.

Patterned brings together five artists, Yuko Kimura, Rebecca Marimutu, Susan K. Schroeder, Lo Smith, and Annmarie Suglio, whose work examines pattern as both visual form and cultural language. Spanning textiles, printmaking, photography, and sculpture, this intergenerational exhibition considers how patterns shape meaning, identity, and behavior across time and place. Organized by SPACES Curatorial Coordinator Thea Spittle, the project asks: can visual patterns help us understand patterns of behavior and vice versa?

Celebrate the opening with us and experience both exhibitions in community. Registration is encouraged! Let us know you're coming by registering below.
